I went birding on two of the only sunny days so far this spring, or at least thats how it seems. The rain has brought a lot of greenery but has made it hard to bird and photograph. The Yellow Breasted Chats are making their funny alien noise calls, the Yellow Warblers are abundant, a suprising number of Western Tanagers have been present, some singing Lazuli Bunting, Bullocks Orioles, Great Horned Owls, and Calliope Hummingbirds were all out these past two trips to Rook and Bennington. The female Wood Duck was swimming with her young, and the Cedar Waxwings were eating bugs and berries. Both the turtle and the snake were enjoying the rare sun. I tried to stay out of the bushes today, but when I saw a male Wood Duck I crawled through the weeds to try and get a closer picture. I missed the closer picture, but I did get a far away picture.
On Friday, there were at least 50 tanagers in the cherries close to the park headquarters.
